The San Diego Animal Support Foundation (SDASF) is hosting the 4th Annual Holiday Pet Food & Toy Drive to help feed hungry and homeless pets over the coming year. Last year's drive brought in food which was shared with struggling rescue organizations, and distributed to people who couldn't afford to feed their pets due to unemployment and other hardships.

"This is one of the few local food drives to benefit pets...the silent victims of this economy," says Darlene White, Executive Director for the San Diego Animal Support Foundation. "With all the seasonal fund raisers that are happening, it's easy to forget that there are people out there who can't feed their dogs and cats."

This year, tax-deductible food donations will be collected by the San Diego Animal Support Foundation to create a pet food bank for people who have lost their jobs or are unable to properly feed their pets due to economic hardship. The food will also be available to struggling foster families who temporarily care for homeless animals from local shelters and rescues.

"I was laid off unexpectedly just before last year's food drive," says volunteer Bonnie Barton, who coordinates the Holiday Food & Toy Drive each year. "I've been there. I know what it's like to struggle with the decision to feed yourself or your pet. No one wants to be forced to give up a family member, and for most of us, pets are family".
